Any sci-fi fan can tell you that the coolest houses are the ones that have an artificial intelligence able to determine your needs ahead of time and respond immediately to your requests. Such homes have been the stuff of science fiction for decades, but like many other inventions that were once fiction, these homes are beginning to emerge in the real world. The term in use today is Smart Homes.

A Smart Home is a house that has been designed to provide the maximum amount of comfort and economy. The house is controlled by one or more computers through a series of wires in a structured cabling system, controlling lighting, appliances, heating and air conditioning, window shades, security systems, cameras, entertainment systems, and more. The effect is amazing when seen in person.

Imagine your home could determine whether you were present and could switch off lights, reconfigure climate controls, or other things to minimize overall power consumption. Also, imagine you are gone on vacation and a pipe bursts, threatening to flood your basement. Your Smart Home immediately shuts off the water to minimize property damage.

There are many benefits to a Smart Home, and as the technology for these modern conveniences becomes more cost effective we will likely see more automation and convenience built standard into today’s homes.

This point goes hand in hand with the previous. As the development and research of wind energy improves, the technology will become cheaper. Actually wind turbines become cheaper and cheaper every year and is at the moment the most cost competitive source of green energy.

Residential

Lastly, we want to talk about the ability to install residential wind turbines. These are of course of smaller scale than commercial, but still can be very beneficial. When there is wind, a small turbine can generate electricity and save them in batteries for times when there is no wind available (such as with a solar battery charger). This works synergistically with residential solar panels and might be able to disconnect an entire housing from the grid or even selling energy back on it!

How to Choose the Right Generator

When you finally choose to buy a generator there are a number of criteria that must be met to ensure you don’t end up waisting your hard earned cash.

More importantly, you’ll end up with a generator that will do the job you need it to.

The following four steps when completed will help you make the right choice.

1. Put some thought into what you want the generator to supply power for. Make a list of all items that you may want switched on at the same time.

2. Calculate the power requirment for each of the items. You should be able to find this from the data plate that should be attached to all electrical items. If you can’t find it the either check the manual or search online. Look for the wattage of the item.

3. Now add up the watts from each of the items so you get an overall total power figure.

4. Select the generator that exceeds the total power requirment from the previous step.

One point to note is that on startup many appliances require more energy than they run at, so build in a margin to cover this and choose a generator rated for more than you require.

For example, to start an induction motor, such as those that run compressors and refridgerators, the wattage needed will typically be two, three or even more times that needed to run the appliance.

If you need to run a computer, or any other appliance that uses microchips, then be warned that a normal generator will not supply clean enough electricity for these.

This is where you should get an inverter generator. They produce electricity which more closely matches a sine wave which is optimal for delicate pieces of equipment like your laptop.

One way to get around this limitation is to use a UPS between the power supply and the computer. This will clean the energy for you.
